A Night Vision Device can be either a 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th generation unit. What this stands for is what type of light intensifier tube is used for that particular device The light intensifier tube is the heart and soul of an NVD.
1st generation is currently the most popular type of night vision in the world. Utilizing the basic principles described earlier, a 1st generation will amplify the existing light several thousand times letting you clearly see in the dark. Dark Lines.

Army Plans to Buy Night Vision Devices

The Army has proposed to buy night-vision devices for multi-caliber assault rifles which will soon be inducted into the force.
Companies have been asked to provide details of the device, known as passive night sight (PNS), that can be fitted on to the weapon for aiming and surveillance after dark. The army has specified that the device must be capable of being mounted on both 5.56 mm and 7.62 mm caliber rifles. It should have a range of 400m for the 5.56

mm assault rifle and 300m for the 7.62 mm firearm. It should also be light in weight.
Having new assault rifles with night vision devices is part of the army's 2020 vision to become a modern fighting force capable of dealing with the changing dynamics of modern warfare. The "night blindness" of the troops has been a major cause for concern for the armed forces.

UFO Caught ON Night Vision

On Monday, September 5, 2011, a 33-year-old witness in the United Kingdom observed multiple UFOs in the dark night sky over Shropshire. The person who reported this UFO sighting also managed to capture the unidentified flying object on a video that he described as follows: "No alien invasion here! Whatever these objects are, they all have one thing in common ...they're leaving!"
The video, which was featured on UFOvideos.tv, appears to have been recorded in night vision. It shows multiple glowing orbs in the night sky that seem to be leaving or ascending further into the heavens over the course of two minutes and 17 seconds.
The glowing orbs were seen flickering and moving high above the stars until they disappeared from view one at a time. This particular UFO sighting may not have the same "wow" factor as the Scorpion-shaped UFO photographed over Spain or the more recent pyramid-shaped UFO recorded in the center of a violent thunderstorm, but it has a certain understated appeal. Military Medics Train With Night Vision Monocular

It’s darker than your average midnight in a palm grove. All the lights are turned off inside the aid station where medics with Company C, 1st “Dragon” Battalion, 63rd Armor Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, United States Division – Center, prepare materials for intravenous injections which they will be administering to simulated casualties.

Only the dim ambient glow created by their PVS-14 monocular night vision device illuminates the outlines of soldiers waiting to be “stuck.” It’s a worst-case scenario that medics with Company C, 1st Bn., 63rd Armor Regt., at Joint Security Station Muthana, Iraq, feel they must be ready to handle.

The optics require medics to maintain the same consistent distance from their point of focus, regardless of the complexity of the task. Clarity, color and shadow are regulated to shades of green and black.

“You find different angles for using your skills,” said Spc. George Wilson, a medic with Company C, 1st Bn., 63rd Armor Regt., and a San Antonio native. “You have turn up your senses and use them in a different way.”

There are many steps to executing an IV stick: apply the tourniquet, find a good vein, clean the puncture site, align the needle and stick, observe a “flash” of blood indicating the stick was successful, lower the needle and advance it slightly, remove the tourniquet, fully insert the catheter, apply pressure to occlude the catheter and then remove the needle.

Achieving a stick may be easier to achieve under full daylight if the casualty is still and the vein easily accessible, but battlefield conditions are rarely that simple and medics are constantly devising different, challenging simulations with which to improve their skills. Veins must be able to be detected with touch, needles indexed by memory, puncture sites maintained by touch and held to mark them. Sticking slightly to the side of the vein could result in a catheter being advanced into tissue. Perceptive fingers are needed to find thinner or covered veins.

The Company C medics are unanimous in their opinion regarding the likelihood that this training will be applied in the field.

“The complete darkness stick represents an extreme, worst-case scenario,” said Staff Sgt. Jeremy Coleman, the aid station non-commissioned officer in charge at Joint Security Station Muthana, and a Soddy Daisy, Tenn., native. “The exercise serves two additional purposes to preparing to work in these conditions: familiarization and as a confidence builder.”

On the off chance that all chemical lights, flashlights, headlights, houselights, and even weapon lights are inoperable, and casualties are in need of treatment, the Company C medics are up to the task.

“It’s something new, and it’s something different,” said Coleman. “The medics have to go strictly off their knowledge of the cardiovascular system and ours did an excellent job.”

"Earlier attempts at similar cloaking devices have hit problems because of cost, excessive power requirements or because they were insufficiently robust," said project manager, Peder Sjolund, in a BAE news release. "Our panels can be made so strong that they provide useful armor protection and consume relatively low levels of electricity, especially when the vehicle is at rest in 'stealth recce' mode and generator output is low."

A brief, contentious patrol in eastern Afghanistan’s Baraki Barak district on March 27 highlighted an important technological gap between U.S. forces and their Afghan partners that will only grow more noticeable as the Americans hand off responsibility to Afghan troops.

The major difference between Odland’s vision and the Afghan officer’s that chilly night in Baraki Barak, a key agricultural district 50 miles south of Kabul, was a 13.5-ounce device mounted to the American sergeant’s helmet and those of his platoon.

The PVS-14 night observation device — or “nods,” as soldiers call it — translates invisible light waves from across the spectrum to a single, visible wavelength. In other words, it sees in the dark, casting even the inkiest night into a palette of greens.

With a barrage of 1,300 improvised explosive devices per month, Afghan insurgents have managed to impede coalition operations practically to the point of stalemate.

But insurgents prefer daylight, mostly leaving the night to tech-savvy U.S. forces. Afghans are “solar-powered,” U.S. Army Capt. Paul Shepard explained, half-jokingly.

Nods and other sensors mean the Americans own the night. And as long as they patrol under the direction of U.S. troops, Afghan forces at least “rent” the advantage of darkness.

But as the low-tech Afghan soldiers and police begin the slow process of taking over responsibility for security starting this summer, they’ll do so with serious limitations compared to the Americans and other foreign troops they’ll lead during the transition period. The fallout from this sort of mismatch was evident in Baraki Barak that night.

Bulgarian Police use night Vision to Stop Cherry Thieves

Bulgarian forces with night-vision goggles appear to be winning an extraordinary fight over thieves seeking to make off with this year's lucrative cherry harvest. For many years, the thieves had little trouble raiding Bulgarian cherry farms at night. But that was before the "cherry war" by police and border guards. This season, police say, few thieves have got away with the fruit in a poor western region known as Bulgaria's "cherry orchard," and the farmers are feeling optimistic.
Sylvia Hristova, whose family relies almost entirely on cherry production, said their income appears safe from thieves this spring and she is overjoyed. "The cherries are our bread and butter, after all," she said.
Before the government-funded battle began, thieves raided the orchards across the region at night, picking most of the fruit and making easy money by selling it the next day at the markets in nearby cities.
Farmers could find no way of stopping them.
Two years ago, Plamen Momchilov, a 46-year-old farmer, was killed by cherry thieves as he tried to keep them out of his orchard. Later, nine thieves were arrested and confessed to beating Momchilov to death with sticks and shovel handles. They were sentenced to 99 years in prison but are currently free pending an appeal.
The attack stirred outrage in the region, prompting authorities to impose this season's tough measures aimed at protecting farmers' property. The police and border guards are using night-vision equipment to keep cherry farms under surveillance and to protect them from thieves.
The sleepy village of Konyavo is one of the beneficiaries. Home to 1,000 people, they live in a poor area near Macedonia's border in a green valley between hills of the Konyavska Mountain. It is one of 30 villages in the Kyustendil region, where the fruit provides a livelihood for farmers. About 6,500 tons of fruit are picked in the region every season, with the bulk being exported to Germany and Italy.
During this cherry season, which lasts from mid-May to the end of June, the region has turned into a war zone with roadblocks in the outskirts of the villages and police searching all vehicles for stolen fruit. The control checkpoints are staffed from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., after which border police with night-vision equipment guard the area.
Katya Tabachka, a police spokeswoman in Kyustendil, said the normal work of border police has not suffered because of the additional assignment. "Border guards are working extra time for which they will be compensated," she said.
Tabachka also said this season no major thefts of cherries have been reported in the region.
"There were just three minor incidents with people carrying small amounts of cherries for which they had no proof that they were legally bought," she said in an interview.
Many farmers have welcomed the intervention and hope such security will root out plundering for good.
"We are investing a lot of hard work all year long just to see the fruits of this work disappear," said Stoyan Stoev, proudly pointing at his trees with ripe cherries.
"I wouldn't mind if they stole a few pounds, but instead of picking them properly they hack off entire branches damaging the trees and affecting next year's production."

Infrared video from the Tulsa Police Department's helicopter of a police chase early Thursday morning shows how difficult it is to run from the chopper.
The chase began when an officer spotted a stolen car near 36th and Sheridan.
Police say that when the officer turned his lights on, the suspect, identified as Brandon Ford, led officers across north and east Tulsa.
Since the camera on the helicopter sees heat, anything that's hot in the video appears to be white.
During the chase the car drove over two separate spike strips which flattened two tires on the right side. The video shows the heat generated by the shredded tires and the rims rolling on the pavement. It also shows pieces of hot rubber flying off the tires.

Thanks to its compact, comfortable design, the Cougar is as cuddly as a kitten.
The optics are excellent too — objects popped out of the dark like monsters on a carnival ride. Like the LN-PB3 from Luna, these use a combination of first generation night vision tech and an IR bulb. Light passes into a tube, where photons are converted to electrons, amplified,and then re-converted into green-hued visible light. The light gathering was excellent, allowing us to see well in near-total darkness outdoors.Meanwhile, in the pitch black of our basement, the IR illuminator was the best of the bunch, painting distant objects in a revealing glow.
We also appreciated the peripheral vision these goggles afforded. While it was far from a true view of the horizon, the Night Cougar’s didn’t leave us feeling boxed in and peering through a tunnel either. While there was some blurring around the edges (also known as geometric distortion, a commonplace attribute of first-gen night vision) it was barely noticeable, and we preferred these overall for scanning side-to-side.
While the fixed zoom means you won’t be reeling in far away views, because there’s no need to adjust from long shots to closeups,these were easiest to use to monitor objects at varying distances. They do,however, offer adjustments to let you get a crisp picture — smooth focusing rings with individual adjustments for each eyepiece made adjusting to our misfit vision a snap.
Finally, we adored the headgear mount that attaches to the peepers for hands-free use. It allows you to keep the Cougars in place in front of your eyes, or flip them up 90 degrees and out of the way if you need to creep about. Not only does it give you a break from gripping the night vision specs to your mug, it also lets you stay on the move while holding stuff — like an AK-47. Or that kitten.

Medical Air Crews Add Night Vision Night Goggles

An air medical transport team has added night vision goggles to help them do their jobs more accurately when accidents happen at night. According to Peter Patton of the Vanderbilt University Medical Center's life flight crew, their goal is to get injured patients the urgent care they need to survive.
"The majority of patients that we transport are extremely serious," Patton said.
Half of the flights this team of pilots and flight nurses make are after dark, where they have to land in fields or on remote roads, which is why they've added another the night vision goggles.
"Essentially, it's like having two little miniature TVs in front of your eyes," Patton said. "They take the outside light and they take the image from that light and magnify it and then project it onto a screen that sits right in front of our eyes."
Once reserved only for military pilots, night vision goggles use the science of optics to take light from stars, the moon and other sources and amplify it 10,000 times to light up the view.
The goggles emit green light since the eyes can distinguish more shades of green than any other color.
"These goggles are actually so detailed that as we were taxiing out over the grass runway just now, i can see the loose grass flying up in the air," said Sheldon Dreaddy, a flight nurse.
Flight nurses said that having the goggles has made their job safer.
"They've made it so detailed that its like flying during the day," said Janelle Zehr, a flight nurse.
The night goggles are intended to create safer flights to save lives.

How does Night Vision work?

Night vision devices gather existing ambient light (starlight, moonlight or infra-red light) through the front lens. This light, which is made up of photons goes into a photocathode tube that changes the photons to electrons. The electrons are then amplified to a much greater number through an electrical and chemical process. The electrons are then hurled against a phosphorus screen that changes the amplified electrons back into visible light that you see through the eyepiece. What is the difference between the 1 Gen and the 2 Gen?

Gen 1 night vision equipment is build around image intensifier tubes with very simple configurations. Gen 1 image tube is vacuum-sealed. Gen 1 equipment has lower light amplification (gain) and image quality (resolution) when compared with Gen 2 and 3, especially on the edges of the screen. Nevertheless, Gen 1 night vision is the most popular and demanded product line of night vision units on the consumer market. Gen 1 equipment is great to have fun with and satisfies the needs of most recreational demands. Gen 2 equipment is enhanced by utilizing a micro-channel plate (MCP). MCP looks like a honeycomb where each cell has a large number of channels for electrons to enter. For each accelerated electron emitted by the photocathode it strikes the channels of the MCP, about 1000 electrons come out on the other end. MCP boosts light gain of an image tube by about 1000 times. As a result the output image is brighter and clearer. Gen 2 equipment is costly and fits the needs of more advanced users. How a NVD can be focused?

- A regular scope has an objective lens and eyepiece adjustment. First, adjust the objective lens to perfect the image. Then adjust the eyepiece to your eyesight. - In binoculars or goggles each eyepiece must be adjusted separately. To do this close your left eye and adjust the right eyepiece. Then open you left eye and adjust the left eyepiece to get a full contrast image. Some night vision goggles require objective focusing first, and then adjusting the eyepieces. NB: Remember that all night vision devices have a minimal focusing distance, a minimal distance at which objects can appear in full focus. back to top
How far can you see with a NVD?

There are many different variables that can effect the distance that you can see with a Night Vision device. The larger the object the easier it is too see. If you're trying to see details we call this recognition range and if you're just trying to see whether something there is or maybe you will just see movement but won't be able to 100% determine who or what it is. This is called detection range. Another variable is lighting conditions. The more ambient light you have (starlight, moonlight, infrared light) the better and further you will be able to see. You can always see further on a night where the moon and stars are out then if it is cloudy and overcast. We typically state that you can tell the difference between a male and a female or a dog and a deer at about 75 to 100 yards. However, if you were looking across an open field and there was a half moon out you could see a barn or a house 500 yards away. What is Infrared Illuminator (IRI) meant for? (Complete Darkness)

All Starlight scopes need some light to amplify. This means that if you were in complete darkness you could not see. Due to this we have a built in infra-red illuminator (IRI) on all of our scopes. Basically what an IRI does is throw out a beam of infra-red light that is near invisible to the naked eye but your NVD can see it. This allows you to use your scope even in total darkness. The IRI works like a flashlight and the distance you can see with it will be limited. This allows our IRI to extend out to 100 yards However, because of the power at a short distance the IRI may cover only 40-60% of the viewing area. back to top

Regardless of how much a person will spend for a scope, $30.00 or $1500.00, the basic design is typically the same. The Cam tube is placed and moved within Outer tube. The Adjusting system is held by one or two 7-pound springs. This has been the standard in the industry for many years.

Due to the lay-out of night vision riflescopes, reticles are 14 times smaller and 10 times more precise then daytime scopes. The initial impression of comparing the white phosphorus image to the green image is that the green image is brighter. However, after viewing the white image for a short period of time (a minute or two) that impression changes to the green image producing a glare-type image and the white phosphorus producing a non-glaring, detailed image, like looking at a black and white photo. When using the scope continuously for extended periods of time, the white image also seems less stressful.
The Commission is very pleased with the performance of the NVM14-WPT for the current application and believes that it will provide very good performance for a variety of other applications.

We own the night. It’s the U.S. Army’s slogan that encapsulates their strength when it comes to night-vision technology. And as part of the Army’s push to encourage the next generation of engineers and designers, a group of local teachers got to see first hand through the eyes of a soldier.
Five science teachers from Fort Belvoir Elementary School attended Knowledge Day at Fort Belvoir. The event aimed to engage educators in Science, Technology, Mathematics and Engineering (STEM) programs in the hopes that they would take the knowledge and excitement back to the classroom. But this group quickly learned they wouldn’t just be playing with high-tech toys—they were “investigating and experimenting” with some serious equipment.
Col. Stephanie Foster, USA, program manager for soldiers, sensors and lasers, Program Executive Office (PEO) Soldier, welcomed the group and thanked the teachers for their service. “For me, it’s all about the little ones,” the colonel explained. She believes finding innovative ways to make STEM subjects interesting for students will influence future leaders in the field.

Knowledge Day kicked off in a 90-meter indoor firing facility long enough for soldiers to put M-24 sniper rifles to the test. First up, the PEO Soldier team presented the PVS-7 night-vision binocular goggle system, which is available to every soldier. The lightweight, hands-free goggles hook on to a soldier’s helmet and can run on two AA batteries for more than 40 hours.
Next, the group tried on the PVS-14 monocular night-vision goggles, which cost $3,200 a pair. The Army is now migrating towards this model, which gives a soldier 20/20 vision in the dark and can upload and export images seen through the lens. Roughly 110,000 soldiers now have access to these in the field.
This smaller, more efficient model aligns with the Army’s constant focus on size, weight and power. Many soldiers carry between 80 and 120 pounds on their backs, said Col. Foster. Everyone wants to add warfighter tools and technology, but no one wants to take anything away, she explained. They need innovative developers to make it easier for warfighters to function while ensuring their comfort and confidence in a variety of conditions. Col. Foster believes the visual timeline of change and innovation associated with the warfighter technology can help students understand how they can impact the field once they graduate.

Next the group held a Raven unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), which weighs in at just 4.5 pounds. The UAV has a 60-inch wingspan and breaks down into seven small pieces that fit into the soldiers backpack. In the field, the warfighter can assemble the Raven and launch it by hand. It transmits video using two charge-coupled device cameras on the UAV’s nose and operates with a controller the size of a PlayStation Portable game controller, which bodes well for the younger generations often glued to their gaming sets, remarked one of the attendees. About 2,000 of these are currently in theater.
Throughout the demonstrations, the focus stayed on educational efforts. Col. Foster said if just one student comes out of Fort Belvoir Elementary School with a desire to study STEM subjects, Knowledge Day has succeeded.

Products that were purchased as factory refurbished, samples or not from an authorized ATN vendor are not be covered by this warranty. In the event a defect that is covered by the foregoing warranty occurs during the applicable period stated above, ATN, at its option, will either repair or replace the product, and such action on the part of ATN shall be the full extent of ATN's liability, and the Customer's sole and exclusive remedy.
